Anxiety is a reflection of our body's and mind's reactions ....

....to threats and uncertainties. It does not mean that having anxiety is wrong. In fact, channeling anxiety can be used creatively if only we can understand how it works.

We all know that anxiety can be a problem. We have different habits in order to break off from an anxiety spell. Yet we often fail from achieving it. For example, we may try to relax but this sounds impossible. It just leads to greater tension. Furthermore, if we try to repress anxiety, this just leads to more panic attacks. Then it all turns out into a vicious cycle. Fear and worry causes anxiety. Anxiety in turn causes more fear and worry. Anxiety may be a normal response to a perceived threat, but sometimes it becomes the threat itself, which is just not good for the body.

Our body's physiology affects the formation of our habits. Because we are a synthesis of our body and our mind, what happens to our body affects our mind and conversely what happens to our mind affects our body. Bodily habits can also affect both our body and our mind. Breathing patterns, being physiological process and also habits, can be changed with a consequent change in anxiety levels.

Our breathing patterns change when we become angry. They also change when we are sexually aroused. In a similar case, our breath patterns also change when we experience anxiety. When we are anxious, our breaths become very shallow. Consequently, changing the way we breathe during an anxiety attack can also change the conditions in our body, which lead to our anxiety.

We notice that young children seem to be so peaceful, without a care, without fear or anxiety. They looks so different from what they would eventually become, us. This reflects the patterns of social conditioning and factors of rearing in our society. We have formed habits, and these habits have contributed to our anxiety. Fortunately, breaking these habits is easy. We only have to change the way we breathe.
